PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
Chromium enhances the efficiency of insulin action but does not increase insulin secretion. In this manner it promotes glucose uptake by the cells, diverting glucose away from fat production (Western J Med 1990, 152:41).
Hydroxy citric acid curbs appetite, thereby reducing food intake and inhibits the conversion of glucose into fat by inhibiting the enzyme ATP-citrate lyase (Lipids 1974, 9 : 121-129).
L-carnitine accelerates the burning of fats by promoting the transport of fatty acids into the cellular mitochondria. It has been demonstrated that L-carnitine significantly increases the use of fat (Int J Sport Med 1989, 10:169).
Forskolin acts primarily by activating the enzyme adenylate cyclase which raises intracellular cyclic AMP levels which acts as a second messenger inside cells by activating other enzymes and therefore pathways. These include increased thyroid function and increased lipolysis (fat burning), both of which are important in slimming programmes since obesity is characterised by low levels of cyclic AMP and low levels of thyroid function.
Physiological quantities of iodide are provided to assist in normalising the basic metabolic rate which is often low in obese patients.
